Methodology of the Spanish courses at OnSpain

We have  a communicative approach for teaching, using activity-based, interactive and learner-centered lessons, as it encourages learners to use the language as much as possible for effective communication in real-life situations.

 

We follow the latest trends in methodology and teachers use an action-oriented approach through partial tasks which end in a final task at the end of each week. In addition we also use a communicative approach.

 

The role of the Spanish teacher

 

The teaching staff in our school is highly professional, all holding degree titles. They have all undergone our in-house training programme on top of this.

All our language teachers are native Spanish speakers. Our school is a Teacher-Training Centre for the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language for native Spanish speaking teachers. All our teachers are natives of the Spanish language and know the focus and techniques applied for teaching languages.

 

OnSpain´s teachers take part of the student activities, promote the respect between the cultures, attend to needs of the student, are attentive to the difficulties, attend to the needs of the student, are attentive to the difficulties, give importance to the personal experiences of the students, are interested in the relationship between what is learned in class with what is used outside the classroom. In short, the student is the protagonist of the teaching and learning process, and it is the teacher who makes the student the center of attention of our classes.

 

The role of the Spanish student

 

The OnSpain students are the protagonists in class and we require their negotiation and cooperation in their tasks.

To organize a trip, to make an order in a restaurant, to negotiate a contract, … are actions the student has to use all his capacities of language to explicate them. The student becomes an active person who participates in his learning, acquiring responsibilities and taking initiatives.

The target for students is to be communicatively competent in the Spanish language in a real context. That is why it is important to know their needs and desires.

 

 

The tasks

Each week there will be a task to be done in class as a target.

These general tasks include actions such as: moving a wardrobe, negotiating a contract, playing cards, ordering at a restaurant, preparing a presentation, organizing a trip …

There will be a weekly work plan to help the student achieve this task, which will involve real processes of language use.
The tasks can be developed in the classroom and individually or in pairs or in groups, so that on the one hand personal reflection is guaranteed, but on the other hand, information is shared, conclusions are drawn.

 

Mistakes in class

 

In OnSpain we know that to learn and to evolve we must be mistaken and be aware of our mistakes to improve.

For the Spanish teacher, error becomes a way of measuring and reflecting. Error is a concept that goes hand in hand with learning.

 

Preparations

Before our courses start students will have to undergo the Spanish school Languages “placement or language test.” Following this each participant will be assigned to a group depending on his or her language level demonstrated in the exam. There are two groups; Grammar and Conversation and Vocabulary. We understand that the student’s level of understanding in the two areas may differ, so we can alter our programme to compensate for this.

Participants are able to change their groups if both their teacher and the Director of Studies feel that this would be best for them. Such changes can be made on the Monday of each week.

Our manuals. Our materials


Together with our students we work with books of different publishers. The reasons why we have chosen these materials are several:

– They are adjusted to the teaching hours we have proposed for the courses
– Various texts and documents are presenting that contextualize the linguistic and communicative contents of the unit, in front of which the students develop activities of compression
– By samples the student is able to deduce the grammatical rules
– Grammar schemes appear with the most important contents of each unit
– They allow the student to enhance their listening comprehension through auditions
– It reveals the Spanish language and culture
– They Include materials that allow the student to explore our culture
