Derya is a student and intern from OnSpain in Malaga. She visited the language school during her Intensive Spanish Course and for the next couple of months she is doing an internship at the Port of Malaga in sunny Andalusia. OnSpain School, language school in Malaga visited her at her working place during her internship and she shared her personal experience as an intern in Spain.
OnSpain: How did you find OnSpain and the internship in Malaga?
Derya: After I finished my school and university I wanted to do an exchange year to gain practical experience. Therefore I searched for a “Work and Travel” in Spain. That’s how I found OnSpain and the Workplacement Programme they´re offering.
OnSpain: Is this your first time in Spain and as an intern abroad?
Derya: Yes and yes. To be honest, I was a bit nervous in the beginning but it is easy to connect with people through the language school and here in my work my colleagues are very friendly. It is great to practice Spanish and work in Spain at the same time.
OnSpain: You have decided to choose the combination language school and internship. Why?
Derya: I become a teacher in English and Spanish. I wanted to do an internship because I want to gain experience in the working world. I am counting the two weeks in the language school as a preparation for the internship to refresh my knowledge in Spanish. It is important to has a good level to be able to communicate.
The advantage of the work placement with Onspain is that everything is organized and you don´t have to worry about anything. During the internship the school keeps contact with you and in case of a problem you have your contact person.
OnSpain: Which kind of experiences have you made so far during your Spanish course and the internship?
Derya: I have met a lot of very nice people and new friends from different countries. Also I have learned to leave my comfort zone and to have more self-confidence know. A recommendable experience!
OnSpain: How is your daily-routine in your company?
Derya: Usually my work starts at eleven. Then I have to animate the people at the port to take a cruise and inform about our service. Our boat sets sail three times during my working time and I accompany the passengers to their seats. After the boat has sailed it is more relaxed and I am working with my co-workers at our stand. My work is done at 4 pm. Thursday and Sunday are my days off.
OnSpain: What was your best experience in Malaga so far?
Derya: Of course all the moments which I spent with the students group of OnSpain during the afternoon activities or the weekend excursions. But also the “Feria de Verano” which is one of the biggest events in Spain. Furthermore I´ll spend my birthday here on the beach which is kind of special.
OnSpain: Do you have any recommendation for the prospective students of OnSpain?
Derya: I would give the advice to stay relaxed, to live for the moment, not to be afraid of speaking Spanish and not to do over thinking specially when you´re missing home.
OnSpain: Thank you very much Derya!
Derya: “De nada”.
Could Derya convince you to work in Malaga or are you still thinking of doing your next internship in Spain?
