Colourful and filled with music and dance, Las Cruces de Mayo de Granada and the Concurso Popular de los Patios de Córdoba are the two major festivals in Andalucia in May.
Are you still wondering about when would be the best time to do your Intensive Spanish course at OnSpain School in Malaga? Our school is open all year round, so it is always a good time! But perhaps the month of May might be especially interesting for your. Here are some reasons why:
Every year on the 3rd of May, the Andalusian city of Granada celebrates the famous Cruces de Mayo. The origin of this festival is the pre-Christian Palo de Mayo: This was a pagan spring festival to worship the greatness of the nature through ritual acts. As a symbol of the nature, a tree trunk was built up in the middle of the market square, which was decorated with flowers, flags, etc., and people danced and sang around it during the time of the ceremony. When Christianity came to Spain, this custom had been slightly rearranged and instead of the tree trunk a cross was erected.
Another special spring tradition has evolved in the Andalusian city of Córdoba : El Concurso Popular de los Patios.
What is a Patio? Due to the dry and warm climate in the Andalusian cities, the inhabitants of Andalusia , first the Romans and later the Moors, developed a special architecture. The living rooms of the houses were built around a small shaded courtyard – the patio – which during the warm summer months became the center of the daily life. In the middle of the patio, there was usually a small well to collect rainwater. The floors of the courtyard were often richly decorated with the most beautiful mosaics. Many flowers and plants provided a refreshing climate.
This tradition has been preserved and since 1921, a competition for the most beautiful patio takes place annually during the first two weeks of May. During these weeks, the whole city is in a festive mood and the people are singing, drinking and celebrating. The greatest reward for the winner is of course the honor. But the most beautiful patios will also be rewarded with a cash prize, which is handed over by the Council of Churches .
