Onspain School is a language based organization, for anyone interested in taking up a Spanish course in Spain, to improve Spanish Grammar, conversational skills, or to travel with our School Tours. They aim to make learning a language a fun, valuable and rewarding experience, just as being abroad should be! Here are 7 reasons why you should learn Spanish with Onspain, according to our English student Katie:
1. The Location
There are various Onspain school locations all over Spain to choose from, including Malaga, Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia. Most of the locations are in big student cities, providing a lively atmosphere and making your experience even more enjoyable. My preferred choice was in the south of Spain, in Malaga, as the weather is generally better, and there are many cities within a close proximity that I would say are definitely worth visiting. Many of the locations are near to the beach, or the beach can be easily accessed by public transport, which is ideal if you want to relax after classes, and probably my main reason for coming to Spain for Spanish lessons!
2. Learn Spanish with Onspain School
The lessons consist of small Spanish Grammar classes, mixed with conversation practice, with various breaks in between. The small number of students in class, combined with the friendliness of the teachers creates an ideal learning environment so you are not intimidated in any way. Classes are only in the morning too, so you will not get too tired out. They seem to understand that an overload of new information can be counter-productive to most people. Furthermore, everything is taught in Spanish, which may seem difficult at first but you soon adjust and you will be surprised by how much you are able to pick up and understand. Because the courses are relatively small there are many different options available, each set of Spanish lessons are tailored to what you feel is more beneficial to you, which big institutions and international University courses would not be able to offer.
All the staff at Onspain School are very friendly and approachable, making it easy to settle in and therefore easier to learn. They all seem to love what they do and are always so enthusiastic, which has a real positive effect on your learning. The Spanish lessons themselves are always fun and never seem to be a chore: you never get the feeling like you are at school. They use fun activities to help keep your attention, such as songs, small excursions, etc. Each class is well organized and all work materials are provided, so you just need to turn up each day and they have everything ready for you.
4. Cultural Experiences through School Travel
Another factor which I liked about the course is that it combines language learning with cultural experiences. School tours around the city you are studying in and other provinces are offered, with experienced guides. Every detail is explained in Spanish, unless requested otherwise, which is useful for broadening knowledge on Spanish history and culture, and practising listening skills. Onspain School clearly believes this aspect of the course is just as important, as do I. I think you can know a language well but understanding the cultural aspects of the country associated with that language helps you so much as you are able to understand the ideas of the people and where they come from, aiding in effective communication. Using this as a basis, it is much easier to pick up vocabulary and understand slang- not very good for improving Spanish grammar but brilliant for fluent communication.
One thing that I noticed about staying in Malaga is that everything is ridiculously cheap. Not only are the Onspain School courses and accommodation options they offer affordable, but so are other activities and more importantly living costs. For example, travelling by coach or train to other areas of Spain, or even flights to other provinces, is far cheaper than you would imagine. Restaurants as well are incredibly good value for money, especially when you order tapas, you can easily have a good meal for under 20 Euro. With this though you will need to be aware that the more touristy areas can be more expensive, I found that if you take some time to walk round and explore your surroundings you can find some lovely places that offer a much cheaper place to eat. The staff at the school can advise you, they know all the best cheap places.
Eating arrangements can also be organized through Onspain School. Their various accommodation options have either half or full board if you don´t want to do self catering. If you decide to stay with a host family, you will get a home cooked meal every day, which will consist of typical Spanish dishes such paella or tortilla, a Spanish omelette. Being quite a fussy eater, before I came here I was a bit dubious about trying new foods, but I have enjoyed nearly every Spanish dish I have tried here. Each Spanish city or province has a speciality dish, for example the area of Pedregalejo in Malaga is famous for its’ seafood, which is a must to try. Furthermore, food related activities, such as Spanish breakfasts, big group meals or even paella lessons are available through the school, which can be a great way of socializing using your newly learned skills and trying new experiences and food.
You are also given plenty of options on the subject of where to stay, as many Spanish courses in Spain do. The most popular option by far is the homestay option. They provide an excellent way to practice your newly learned skills and gain confidence in communication in another language. However if you prefer a more holiday-like feel you can also stay in a hotel or apartment, located within walking distance to the schools. Many of the schools are situated close to the beach, ideal for relaxing time after the mornings´ classes, and all of the schools are in city centres. Once you have completed your course you receive a teacher report and diploma certificate, and if you feel you would benefit from a few more lessons then follow up online classes from the Onspain School are available.
Above all, if you are looking for a fun filled intensive Spanish course in Spain, then this is ideal for you.
