Which places are most important in Malaga?

In Malaga there are many places to visit, but all visitors must see:

The Alcazaba

The Alcazaba is a military fortress built on the walls of a Roman fortress in the eleventh century. The fortress is situated on top of a hill where you have great view over the city and the sea. Originally consisted of 3 protecting walls (of those two still remain), over 100 towers and a top with a residential area including 3 palaces.

Gibralfaro

Next to the Alcazaba is located Gibralfaro Castle with which is linked through two of its towers. Supposedly this place was formerly a beacon in times of the Phoenicians and from the rests Abderramán III built the fortress which Yasuf I changed in the fourteenth century into a castle.

Roman Theatre

The Roman Theatre is located right at the foot of the Alcazaba. It was not discovered until 1951 despite of its size with a radius of 31 meters and a width of 19 meters. Studies reveal that it was not used until the third century and the construction of the Alcazaba used part of its walls.

The Cathedral

The construction of the Cathedral of Malaga began in 1528 after the conquest of Málaga. It was built over a mosque, which was destroyed when the city lost Muslims. Its construction was not completed until 1782 and therefore it shows many different architectural styles such as Gothic in its base, Renaissance and Baroque towers facade.

The Church of Santiago

The Church of Santiago, located in the street Granada, was built in the sixteenth century with a mixture of Gothic and Mudéjar (Moorish). This was also the church where Pablo Picasso was baptized.

The birthplace of Picasso is located in the centre of Málaga in the Plaza de la Merced.

And between the museums highlight: Picasso Museum, CAP, museum of arts and customs, municipal heritage museum and the Carmen Thyssen museum, whose address is C/ Compañía 10.
